This is when the natural world really starts buzzing. With trees in vivid green leaf and summer flowers – such as foxgloves, poppies and honeysuckle – offering both colour and heady scents, stepping outdoors can feel like sensory overload. There are so many things to do in summer, for you, your friends and family – and the wildlife is just as busy. Baby birds learn to fly. Pollinating insects go mad for nectar. Chirping grasshoppers provide an unmistakable soundtrack. Bats startle the evening air. And if the heat and humidity become too intense, a thunderstorm booms in to cool things down.

Weather tips

Of course, summer’s just as changeable as any season – but when it’s warm, having fun in the sun means protecting yourself and your family. Sun cream (at least factor 15) is essential, and plenty of water to sip throughout the day. And although you’ll be in lightweight clothing, a hat’s a wise move, to keep the rays off your head.
