Introduction

These multi-award-winning cruises are a wonderful way to see the outstanding marine wildlife around Cornwall’s spectacular coastline and surrounding waters.

With passionate naturalists on board every trip and the potential of sighting and interacting with dolphins on any cruise throughout the year, these cruises are popular with all ages!

You will be greeted at the marina reception by our friendly crew and brought down to be welcomed on board our boat ‘Free Spirit’ by Captain Keith.

We typically begin by hugging the coastline, searching for animals which inhabit this region such as bottlenose dolphins, harbour porpoises, grey seals and a diversity of coastal birds.

As well as spend time exploring far offshore in search of pelagic species including common dolphins, minke whales and storm petrels.

From when we leave our mooring until we are safely tied up again, we never stop searching for wildlife - nothing gets past the eagle eyes of Captain Keith.

Ak Wildlife Cruises

Our cruises cover the whole of Falmouth Bay; east, to the high cliffs of the dramatic Dodman Point along the stunning Roseland Peninsula; then all the way west, past the glorious Helford estuary, to the iconic and ruggedly beautiful Lizard Peninsula and Point.

Each cruise begins with a cruise up the river to the entrance to the Carrick Roads, the third deepest natural harbour in the world.

Why this experience is great for you

  • A unique opportunity to experience and witness some of the UK’s best marine wildlife including whales, dolphins, seals, and a whole host of pelagic seabirds - what better way to do this than on a boat?!
  • Experienced crew - Captain Keith has been working as a professional wildlife guide for some 45 years and loves nothing more than sharing his knowledge and passion for all wildlife. Each of his crew are qualified Zoology Masters graduates so you can be sure you are in excellent hands.
  • Unforgettable memories and photographs to stay with you for life.
  • ‘Blue Mind’ - it is well documented that spending time in, on or close to the ocean has incredible benefits for your physical and mental health and well-being... we certainly experience these positive effects and we would love to share this with you too!
  • Contribute to a large database - we record all the wildlife we see on every trip and share our cetacean sightings freely with various wildlife and conservation groups to help monitor and protect the animals in our waters - which we wouldn’t be able to do without the incredible support of our clients.

Facilities and additional information

Equipment: Please bring plenty of layers as well as FULL waterproofs (it is always much chillier offshore!). Binoculars are also highly recommended if you can get hold of a pair. Photography is actively encouraged, so a camera is always a good idea! Snorkelling kit if applicable.

Weather: We are very lucky to have the Lizard Peninsula providing excellent shelter to Falmouth Bay. But if conditions become too rough to head offshore, we will still continue with the trip but head back up the Carrick Roads to explore the small creeks of our wonderful and wildlife-rich Fal estuary, which stretches all the way up to Truro. With the fabulous shelter afforded by this beautifully vast and diverse estuary, we have never lost a day to the weather.

Parking: Parking is available at the marina and costs £1 per hour.

Wheelchair accessibility: AK Wildlife Cruises welcome wheelchair users on board, however please be aware that the person must be able to move briefly from their wheelchair, down a small platform step and onto a bench on board the boat, with crew support.

Dogs: Welcome at a small cost.

Food and drink: We don’t provide any refreshments on board, so please bring plenty of food and water with you and a flask of hot drink if you like. The UpperDeck Bar & Restaurant is based at the marina if you would like to get any refreshments before or after your trip.

Toilets: There is a toilet on board and toilets are also available through the marina reception if you wish to use them before/after your trip.

Additional info: We also provide combined snorkelling and wildlife watching charters, a unique way to witness our marine life from both below and above the surface. Once we have finished snorkelling where there is every chance of being joined by one of our inquisitive seals, we will head offshore to look for cetaceans and seabirds. Wetsuits, fins, mask and snorkel required. Please enquire for more info.
