Introduction

Join Devon Wildlife Tours for a close encounter with one of the UK's most secretive and spectacular nocturnal birds; the Nightjar. Under their guidance, you can also hope to encounter several other nocturnal specialists including Owls, Bats and potentially even Glow Worms.

Devon Wildlife Tours has over two decades of experience exploring this magical part of the UK and discovering its wildlife secrets. Run and owned by passionate local Ecologists, they love to share knowledge & skills in the hope of infecting others with their enthusiasm. In a world so disconnected from nature, they aspire to help people rediscover the natural world and promote the importance of its conservation.

Arriving about an hour before dusk, you’ll start your experience by taking a guided walk around the site, talk about the wildlife and enjoy the beautiful heathland views as the sun goes down.

Once the light begins to fade, the goal will be to track down one of the UK’s most spectacular nocturnal species; the Nightjar. Due to their mysterious nature and appearance, you'll use a mix of ‘novel’ techniques in an attempt to get close to your target and learn how to listen out for their distinctive ‘churring’ calls.

As well as learning all about the life of Nightjars, you’ll keep our eyes and ears open to any other special nocturnal species which might be encountered including Bats and Owls.

To end your evening, surrounded in full darkness, the team will take one last look around, and if you are extremely lucky you may uncover a Glow Worm in full green luminescence (June onwards) before heading back to the start.

Equipment needed: Please ensure that you have comfortable clothing suited to the forecasted weather and sturdy waterproof footwear. The site has paths but these may be muddy so you may wish to bring a walking pole for added stability. Although not essential, if you own binoculars, bring them with you or please try to borrow some as you will limit your experience without them. Cameras and photography are welcome but not at the detriment of welfare and so you will be expected to strictly follow the guidance of your guide.

Weather: Bad weather (heavy rain, strong wind) can have significant impacts on the behaviour of wildlife and the enjoyment of looking for it. Should we need to cancel due to bad weather, we will aim to notify you 24hrs in advance.

Parking: Parking will be discussed with you once your booking is confirmed but all will be within easy access of the experiences starting point.

Food and drink: No food or drink is provided as part of this experience. Local facilities are available nearby should they be required.
