Introduction

Join Devon Wildlife Tours on an evening excursion to help you encounter one of the UK's rarest mammals, the Eurasian Beaver. The River Otter has become one of the top sites in the country to spot these amazing animals, as well as being home to a whole host of other incredible creatures including Dippers, Kingfishers and Otter. With a 95% sighting success rate, Devon Wildlife Tours offers you a strong chance of seeing Beavers and a truly memorable experience you can share with all your friends and family.

Devon Wildlife Tours has over two decades of experience exploring this magical part of the UK and discovering its wildlife secrets. Run and owned by passionate local Ecologists, they love to share knowledge & skills in the hope of infecting others with their enthusiasm. In a world so disconnected from nature, they aspire to help people rediscover the natural world and promote the importance of its conservation.

Arriving early evening, your experience will start with an introduction to the River Otter and it’s wonderful wildlife, including a brief history of the Beavers who've now come to call this area home

We’ll then begin our exploration of the river, visiting places where Beavers have been hard at work chewing on trees and creating dams/lodges. Focusing on local hotspots, we’ll constantly keep our eyes open for any Beavers who are most active around this time, including their newly born kits.

As well as learning all about the Beavers, we’ll keep our eyes and ears open for any other special wildlife which can be encountered on the river including Grey Wagtail, Dipper and the stunning Kingfisher which all regularly breed on the river.

As the name suggests, there is always the possibility of seeing another magnificent mammal; the Otter. You’ll learn how to look for evidence of Otters on a river and, if we get really lucky, we may even spot one whilst we are looking for Beavers.

Facilities and additional information

Equipment needed: Please ensure that you have comfortable clothing suited to the forecasted weather and sturdy waterproof footwear. The site has paths but these may be muddy, so you may wish to bring a walking pole for added stability. Although not essential, if you own binoculars, bring them with you or please try to borrow some as you will limit your experience without them. Cameras and photography are welcome but not at the detriment of welfare and so you will be expected to strictly follow the guidance of your guide.

Weather: Bad weather (heavy rain, strong wind) can have significant impacts on the behaviour of wildlife and the enjoyment of looking for it. Should we need to cancel due to bad weather, we will aim to notify you 24hrs in advance.

Parking: Parking will be discussed with you once your booking is confirmed but all will be within easy access of the experiences starting point.

Food and drink: No food or drink is provided as part of this experience. Local facilities are available nearby should they be required.
