Facilities and additional information

The difficulty level of these walks has been rated as moderate. The walk is approximately 3-4 miles with a relaxed pace and many stops to practice navigation techniques, but participants need to be happy spending approximately 3 hours in hilly moorland terrain.

Equipment needed: Please bring sturdy walking boots, sunscreen, warm layers (including a hat and gloves), a waterproof jacket and trousers (whatever the forecast), plus drinks and a snack.

We recommend that each person has an individual map (OL28 Ordnance Survey map of Dartmoor) and compass*, so they can learn individually. We have a few spares we can loan if required.

Additional recommendations in relation to Covid-19: Hand sanitiser, a personal mask, a pair of disposable gloves each and first aid kit. From a safety perspective, these offer additional protection against Covid-19 if there were to be an accident and first aid is required by us or the rescue teams.

*For advice on compasses, Silva is recommended and a good source is Dartmoor National Park Visitors Centres or dash4it.co.uk. Any of the following would be fine: Silva Starter 8; Silva Field; Silva Ranger; Silva Expedition 4.

Weather: This activity will run in all weather, as rain and fog are great training aids! The only time this experience would be postponed is if heavy snow limits driving conditions.

Parking: There are free car parks nearby in the majority of locations that the experience runs at.

Food and drink: There are plenty of food and refreshment options nearby most walks, including pubs, cafes, etc. Some are within walking distance, others a short drive away.

Toilets: Recommendations for toilets can be given en route to the walk start point.

Sadly this experience is not suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs.

Dogs: We find groups struggle with handling a dog as well as concentrating on a map and compass, so we advise you not to bring them. However, if you are, please let us know at the point of booking.

Dartmoor's Daughter offers a range of locations to carry out this activity - please specify when booking. Locations include Poundsgate, Belstone & Postbridge.
